![]() Prior to modern water controls, the rivers flooded regularly, a process that filled these meanders, lakes and swamps and brought annual deposition of new sediments. During the Pleistocene, these rivers meandered widely, creating oxbow lakes, swamps and small islands and ridges. The three branches of the Körös River, along with the Berettyó River along the northern border of the basin, form the primary drainage and are the source of a subtle yet complex landscape. The study area (Figure 1) falls into the Körös-Berettyó basin, a flat and poorly-drained alluvial plain in eastern Hungary. of everyday practice reflect a common worldview and cultural traditions regarding the use of space and (3) to demonstrate the applicability of soilscapes and a ‘sediments as material culture’ approach as essential parts of both methodology and interpretation.
